Women have always climbed mountains with the same enthusiasm, virtuosity and fearlessness as men. However, for a long time this went largely unnoticed and women’s accounts were hardly documented. The Lost and Found Memories Office wants to change this: From December 2021 onwards, the participatory project will focus on around forty "women on the mountain" from the Alpine Museum's collection. Additionally, it aims to offer a platform for the mountain memories of today's female alpinists and climbers: be it in the form of a travelogue or a summit selfie - we are interested in what women experience, think and achieve in the mountains.
Gaps in the past can never be completely filled. However, we can ensure that female climbers and mountaineers enjoy a more visible profile in the future – with your help!
The Lost and Found Memories Office gives the Swiss Alpine Museum an additional exhibition space. The themes change every two years. The slogan for the first year is “Get up on the piste”. Whether you’re the terror of the slopes, a fair-weather skier, or more of a homebody: Lost and Found Memories Office № 1 was dedicated to skiing-related treasures and the stories associated with them.
The Lost and Found Memories Office places the collection centre stage at the Swiss Alpine Museum. But no collection is perfect, and there are yawning gaps just about everywhere. We’re trying to reduce these one by one. But we need you to make these gaps smaller! Not only are we looking for your personal items, we also want to know what your experience has been using these materials in the mountains.
The Swiss Alpine Museum (alps) sees itself as a contemporary exhibition venue addressing present-day issues such as identity, mobility, regional development, innovation, and change. Essentially, it is all about how people relate to the mountains in practice. The project work undertaken by the Alpine Museum involves researching, collecting, documenting, and presenting materials. The museum stages exhibitions, hosts events, prepares educational materials for schools, and engages in thematically relevant partnerships with other organizations in Switzerland and abroad.
