Repairing is cool! Whether it’s a critique of consumerism, concerns about sustainability, or just a lifestyle choice, we take a look at what lies behind the trend for repairs and what that means for mountaineering.
The participatory collection project »Lost and Found Memories Office № 3« shows that the idea of care and repair has always been an intrinsic part of mountain sport, inspiring some of the more creative repairs today. After all, things get broken in the mountains too. But what do you have to consider when repairing outdoor gear? At what point does safety play a role? And what stories do the repaired and broken objects have to tell? Tell us about your mountain adventures, mishaps, patch-ups, and life hacks – either there in the exhibition or online at contribute.
The Lost and Found Memories Office gives the Swiss Alpine Museum an additional exhibition space. The themes change every two years. The slogan for the first year is “Get up on the piste”. Lost and Found Memories Office № 1 was dedicated to skiing-related treasures and the stories associated with them. Lost and Found Memories Office № 2 focus on «Women on the Mountain».
The Lost and Found Memories Office places the collection centre stage at the Swiss Alpine Museum. But no collection is perfect, and there are yawning gaps just about everywhere. We’re trying to reduce these one by one. But we need you to make these gaps smaller! Not only are we looking for your personal items, we also want to know what your experience has been using these materials in the mountains.
The Swiss Alpine Museum (alps) sees itself as a contemporary exhibition venue addressing present-day issues such as identity, mobility, regional development, innovation, and change. Essentially, it is all about how people relate to the mountains in practice. The project work undertaken by the Alpine Museum involves researching, collecting, documenting, and presenting materials. The museum stages exhibitions, hosts events, prepares educational materials for schools, and engages in thematically relevant partnerships with other organizations in Switzerland and abroad.
